Our Story
During the 1990’s, craft beer influences came from England, Germany and Belgium. The Belgian breweries and brewing methods were especially interesting at that time, and opening a brewery and producing these kinds of beers became the primary focus of Ann and Charles Williamson. With Charles having seven years of brewing experience at New York City and Long Island breweries, the events of 9/11/2001 convinced them it was time to leave the city and build their own farm brewery.
In the early 2000s, the craft beer markets on the East coast were still young, and brewing a craft canned beer was an uncommon market segment. Charles decided to approach the transitional craft beer drinker by producing English and German-influenced styles. Fortuitously, Butternuts was on the cutting edge of what was to become a tidal wave of canned craft beer.
Butternuts Beer & Ale has been producing beer for nearly two decades, and Charles takes great pride in crafting his own versions of styles he believes the specialty craft beer drinker will value and enjoy. Still influenced by his love of the English, German and Belgian beers, his beers run the gamut from modern and popular, to underserved and unpopular.
